Common questions
What is the difference between grout repair and regrouting?
This is a question we're asked regularly. Grout repair — which is what our Shower Restore package covers — addresses localised areas of failed grout. Individual joints are raked out and repointed where needed, rather than all the grout being removed and replaced.
Full regrouting involves removing every joint across the entire tiled surface using an oscillating tool or grout rake and re-applying grout from scratch. It's a significantly more time-consuming and disruptive process and is needed where grout failure is widespread across the whole shower rather than in specific areas.
We'll always assess your shower honestly on arrival and tell you which approach is appropriate. If the damage is more extensive than our Restore package covers, we'll tell you before we start — not after.
Why we don't offer grout recolouring
You may have seen other companies offering grout recolouring or grout painting as a quick fix for stained or tired-looking grout. We don't offer this service and never will. Grout recolouring products apply a surface coating over existing grout rather than cleaning or repairing it.
In our experience — and that of many of our customers who've tried it before calling us — these coatings peel and chip over time in a wet shower environment, often within months, leaving the grout looking significantly worse than before.
We focus exclusively on solutions that actually last — professional deep cleaning, genuine grout repair and regrouting where necessary. It takes longer and costs more than painting over the problem, but the results stand up over time.
What is minor grout repair?
Minor grout repair is the process of removing damaged, cracked or missing grout from individual joints and replacing it with fresh colour-matched grout. This is different from full regrouting — which involves removing all the grout across the entire tiled surface — and is appropriate where the damage is localised rather than widespread.
In our Shower Restore package, minor grout repair covers areas where individual grout lines have failed — typically at stress points like corners, edges and areas exposed to the most water. We rake out the damaged grout, clean the joint thoroughly, and apply fresh grout matched as closely as possible to your existing grout colour.
If the extent of grout damage across your shower is more widespread, we'll assess this with you on arrival and advise whether a more extensive repair is needed before we start work.
Can cracked grout cause serious damage?
Yes — and this is one of the most important reasons to address cracked shower grout promptly rather than leaving it. When water penetrates cracked or missing grout repeatedly over time it saturates the substrate behind the tiles — typically plasterboard or sand and cement render. This causes:

Plasterboard to soften, swell and eventually disintegrate

Timber studwork and floor joists to rot

Mould to develop within the wall structure, spreading beyond the bathroom

Tiles to become hollow, loose and eventually fall away from the wall

In serious cases, structural damage to floors and walls requiring major repair work
The cost of a full shower restoration at around £349 compared to the cost of structural repair, replastering and retiling is significant. Addressing grout damage early is always the right financial decision.
Why does shower grout crack and crumble?
Grout cracking and crumbling in a shower is a very common problem and is caused by a combination of factors:
Movement — showers experience constant thermal expansion and contraction from hot and cold water cycling through every use. Over time this stresses grout joints, particularly at corners and edges, causing them to crack. This is why silicone — not grout — should always be used at movement joints like internal corners and the junction between wall and tray.
Age and wear — grout naturally degrades over time, particularly in a high-moisture environment. Older cement-based grout becomes brittle and begins to break down after years of use.
Water ingress — once a small crack appears in grout, water penetrates beneath it, undermining the adhesive behind the tiles and accelerating the deterioration. Left untreated this can lead to tiles becoming loose or hollow-sounding and eventually falling away from the wall.
Poor original installation — grout that was not mixed correctly, applied too thinly, or not allowed to cure properly before the shower was used will fail sooner than correctly installed grout.
How long does the shower restore take?
A Shower Restore typically takes a full day (around 6 hours) depending on the size of the shower and the extent of grout damage. Because grout repair requires time to set before the surface can be cleaned and sealed over it, this is our most time-intensive package.
