As a general rule, shower sealant should be inspected every 2–3 years and replaced every 3–5 years under normal use. However if you notice any discolouration, mould, cracking, or the sealant pulling away from the wall or tray, it should be replaced sooner regardless of age. Leaving failing sealant in place risks water ingress behind your tiles which can cause expensive structural damage over time.
This is one of the most common mistakes homeowners make — and one we're asked about regularly. Applying new sealant over old might look fine initially, but it won't adhere properly to the deteriorated surface beneath. The new sealant will fail much sooner, often within weeks, and the underlying mould problem won't be addressed. The correct method is always full removal of the old sealant, thorough cleaning and drying of the substrate, and application of fresh sealant — which is exactly how we work.
We use professional-grade, fungicide-treated bathroom silicone sealant — the same products used by the trade, not the budget products available in DIY stores. Our sealant is flexible, fully waterproof, and formulated to resist mould and mildew. We carry a range of colours including white, cream, grey and clear to match your existing bathroom finish.
Fresh silicone sealant requires a minimum of 24 hours to cure fully before the shower is used. We'll always advise you of this at the end of the job. Using the shower before the sealant has fully cured risks damaging the finish and compromising the watertight seal.
Recurring mould on sealant is almost always caused by one of three things: inadequate bathroom ventilation, using harsh bleach-based cleaners that degrade the sealant surface over time, or leaving the shower wet after use. Our professional-grade sealant contains a fungicide to inhibit mould growth, but good aftercare makes a significant difference. You can find a simple aftercare guide at the footer of the website.
Mould returning quickly after a reseal is almost always caused by external factors rather than the quality of the sealant itself. The most common causes are: poor bathroom ventilation (the single biggest factor), leaving the shower wet after use, cleaning the sealant with bleach-based products which break down the surface over time, or using the shower before the sealant had fully cured after application. Our sealant contains a built-in fungicide to resist mould — but no sealant in the world will remain mould-free in a poorly ventilated bathroom.
We carry white, brilliant white, cream, light grey, anthracite grey and clear silicone as standard. White is by far the most common choice for modern bathrooms. If you have an unusual colour scheme, let us know when you enquire and we'll do our best to source a match. We always recommend mentioning your preferred colour in the enquiry form or uploading a photo so we can bring the right product on the day.
Professional-grade bathroom silicone typically lasts 3–5 years under normal conditions. However lifespan varies significantly based on how the shower is used and maintained. Factors that shorten sealant life include harsh cleaning products, poor ventilation, heavy daily use, and movement in the shower tray or screen. Our guarantee covers workmanship for 12 months — but with good aftercare many of our customers get 5 years or more before needing a reseal.
